Students and Technology: Addiction or Education? [Infographic]
by Elbert Chu
Here’s a good summary of statistics and other factoids about students and technology drawn up in a not so horrible illustration.
Infographics help digest numbers in context more quickly and memorably. As far as infographics go, this one is mediocre and somewhat disjointed, but is worthwhile because it has a bunch of interesting observations mixed in with meaningless numbers. Food for thought includes:
“A University of Maryland study asked students not to use media for 24 hours. A large percentage of students experienced symptoms similar to drug and alcohol withdrawal.”
In case you’re not familiar with what that feels like, think words like: “lonely, irritable, panicked, anxious, restless, depressed, dependent, crazy, jittery and paranoid.” The quotes above are not high school kids. They are taken from 1,000 journalism PhD students. Turns out, all the “friending” on Facebook was more about friending their tech. According to the study, “Some came to recognize that… their relationship to media was one of the closest ‘friendships’ they had.”
The infographic was produced by Onlineeducation.net who also produced a better organized infographic charting the chronology of e-learning.
Speaking on Onlineeducation.net, why does this ranking service provide direct requests for more information to their “top three schools”: University of Phoenix, Kaplan, and Liberty? Undoubtedly they get paid for leads? I feel a “Friend, Fraud, or Fishy” installment coming up soon.
Any experience with Onlineeducation.net out there, let us know in the comments.
